EDF, the Energy giant, in a press release yesterday, confirmed that the ‘B’ Nuclear Power plant will commence defueling ‘with immediate effect’. This is the first stage of decommissioning, which comes as a bit of a surprise as the station had been granted and extension of its serviceable life to 2025. It has not produced electricity since 2018. Technical issues – not divulged in any great detail.
As with the ‘A station’ it will take many years for decommissioning to be completed, and, as a further ‘C’ station was not given the go ahead, what will the future hold? A large car park for the growing masses that are encouraged to come to Dungeness perhaps?
